Exploring New Waters: A Fly Fishing Adventure at Minersville Reservoir

As I was embarking on a road trip through southern Utah, I couldn’t resist the urge to break up the monotony of the drive with a quick fishing detour. Scouring Google Maps for potential fishing spots along my route, I stumbled upon a gem: Minersville Reservoir, located just 15 minutes west of Beaver, Utah, in the heart of central Utah.

Discovering Minersville Reservoir

Mid-day sun illuminating the landscape, I arrived at Minersville Reservoir around 11 am. The winds were steady, blowing from the southwest, but the blue skies and mild temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s promised a perfect day for fishing. With no other anglers in sight, I had the reservoir all to myself.

Navigating through the trees and bushes lining the shore, casting proved to be a challenge with the persistent winds. However, undeterred by the conditions, I ventured to one of the inlets along a dirt access road, eager to test the waters of this new fishing hole.

Fishing Techniques and Success

Armed with olive streamers adorned with a hint of flash, I began my quest for rainbow trout. With a short, quick retrieve, I enticed the fish lurking beneath the surface. Patience was key as I allowed the fly to sink to the desired depth before commencing the retrieve.

To my delight, the fish were eager to play. Within just over an hour of casting, I landed approximately 10 vibrant rainbow trout. Each catch fueled my excitement and reaffirmed my decision to explore this new fishing spot. You can check out a video of some of my catches…… and losses on YouTube at this link.

Preparation and Reflections

Prior to my trip, I spent some time checking out maps to scout potential fishing locations. A quick search revealed shared experiences and insights from other anglers who had fished these waters before. Additionally, I checked government sites for regulations to ensure a responsible angling experience. https://wildlife.utah.gov/fishing/fishing-regulations.html
