Have you ever dreamed of embarking on a fishing expedition that takes you off the beaten path, far from crowded fishing spots and into the heart of untamed nature? Well, that’s exactly what we experienced on our recent fishing trip to Spain, where we set out in search of the elusive Barbel.
After about 14 hours of travel, spanning from Salt Lake City to Paris for a brief layover, followed by a shorter flight from Paris to Madrid, we finally set foot in Spain. Exhausted yet exhilarated, we met with the team from The Fly Center in Madrid to chart our course for the adventure ahead.
Our journey through Spain would take us on a captivating route, beginning in Cordoba and leading us through the historic cities of Sevilla, Ronda, and Granada, before circling back to Madrid. Along the way, we had planned several fishing excursions, each promising its own unique thrills and challenges.
One such memorable stop was Embalse del Gergal, just north of Sevilla, where we set our sights on the elusive Barbel. This still water fishing spot nestled amidst the Spanish countryside would become the setting for our most remarkable fishing experience yet.
With its tranquil beauty and abundant aquatic life, Embalse del Gergal offered the perfect backdrop for our pursuit of the Barbel, a carp-like freshwater fish renowned for its spirited fight and elusive nature.
Accompanied by a diverse group of anglers, ranging from beginners to advanced, we teamed up with knowledgeable local guides to enhance our chances of a successful fishing experience. Their expertise proved invaluable, especially in navigating the ever-changing weather conditions that tested our skills and patience.
With only two days of respite from the rain, wind, and cloudy skies, spotting the elusive Barbel became a formidable task. But armed with 9ft 4weight fly rods and a selection of carefully chosen flies, including beetle patterns, ants, and nymphs, we ventured forth undeterred.
When you feel the take of the Barbel, it’s essential to exercise patience, allowing a couple of seconds before setting the hook. But once you do, hold on tight, because the Barbel wastes no time in putting your skills to the test. With a powerful surge, it darts towards the center of the lake, determined to shake free from your line and make its escape.
The sensation of the pull on the line and the bend of the rod is nothing short of exhilarating! It’s a thrilling battle of strength and wits between angler and fish, with each maneuver adding to the adrenaline-fueled excitement.
From there, it becomes a delicate dance of give and take. Keeping good tension on the line is crucial, allowing the Barbel to run when it needs to while reeling in steadily to gain ground. However, it’s essential to strike a balance; holding the line too tight risks snapping the tippet, while being too passive may result in losing the fish altogether.
Throughout our fishing expedition, we experienced a few heart-pounding moments where the line between success and defeat hung by a thread. But with each encounter, we learned to finesse our approach, finding the perfect equilibrium between control and flexibility.
The remote beauty of the area added to the allure of our fishing adventure. Surrounded by pristine landscapes and crystal-clear waters, we were reminded of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these precious habitats and their inhabitants. With Barbel being a protected species, we practiced catch and release, using barbless hooks to minimize harm.
Our time in Spain was not just about fishing; it was also about learning and sharing experiences. Despite language barriers, the universal language of fishing brought us closer together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. And while Barbel may not be native to our home waters in Utah, the skills and techniques we honed on this trip have inspired us to explore new horizons and seek out new fishing adventures.
Our fishing trip to Spain was a testament to the spirit of adventure and the thrill of discovery. It reminded us that sometimes the best experiences come when we step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown. So, to all fellow fishing enthusiasts, we encourage you to seek out new waters, try new techniques, and embark on your own unforgettable adventures. Who knows what treasures await beneath the surface?
